Design Your Fulfilling Career

“Clarity comes from engagement, not thought.” – Marie Forleo

In 2020, I hit rock bottom!

After years of dedication, I failed my best UPSC attempt. It felt like my dream had shattered. No backup plan. No clarity. Just a sense of emptiness.

But what if failure wasn’t the end? What if it was an opportunity to redesign my life?

That’s when I found the Design Your Life framework. A structured yet flexible way to navigate career uncertainty. Skeptical but desperate, I gave it a shot. And it changed everything.

If you’re feeling lost, this approach might change everything for you too.

Step 1: Empathize – Know Yourself Beyond Labels

We often define ourselves by a single career goal. But who are you beyond that?

I asked myself:

  • What excites me beyond UPSC?
  • What skills do I have that I’ve ignored?
  • What kind of work energizes me?

Turns out, I had strengths in business consulting, industrial engineering, teaching, and social impact. My identity wasn’t just tied to one exam.

A psychometric assessment helped too—it gave me an unbiased reflection of my personality, interests, aptitudes, and career fit. Sometimes, self-discovery needs a little science.

Step 2: Define – What Do You Really Want?

Why do we chase certain careers? Is it status? Stability? Impact?

I dug deep. And I realized IAS wasn’t my end goal. My real aspiration? Helping others using my strengths and potential was.

That clarity shifted everything.

Step 3: Ideate – Exploring Possibilities

Once I let go of rigid thinking, the doors opened.

What if my purpose could be fulfilled in different ways?

I explored:

  • Business consulting
  • Social entrepreneurship
  • UPSC teaching
  • NGO leadership

Suddenly, I had options. And that realization was freeing.

Step 4: Prototype – Testing Before Committing

Clarity comes through action. So, I tested the waters.

I reached out to professionals. I took up short projects. I immersed myself in different industries.

And the more I explored, the clearer I became. One issue stood out: career confusion itself. I knew that struggle firsthand. And I wanted to solve it for others.

Step 5: Test – Taking the Leap

I trained as a Certified Career Analyst. I studied psychometric assessments and career psychology. Then, I took the plunge and launched Helping Stone – Life & Career Discovery.

Now, I help others navigate the same confusion I once faced. Because I know how lost it feels. And I also know—there’s always a way forward.
